Flashes and floaters, suspect papilloedema it’s considered standard to do dilated volk before deciding if to refer.
When I was newly qualified I decided to get more with Volk and try to use as standard. I practiced by doing Volk on younger adults ie big pupils and don’t fidget and was just doing ONH assessment to begin with, then rest with direct, then progressed to looking aroing post pole, cos can get all that without px having to move gaze, eventually getting them to different points of gaze. Can’t avoid it adding time to your test but if just doing a little at a time like this you’ll be surprised how quickly you get more confident, and won’t have as much back pain too. Watch out for head position though, especially kids and older folk. Well worth taking the time to master.
